Took advantage of a couple of offers to make some special plans in February.
The Venetian invited me to enjoy 3 comped nights and tickets for two for a special Super Bowl Party on Feb. 5. So this morning I called. Helen and I will be enjoying three FREE nights in a Venetian suite, specially adapted for handicapped visitors. Then on Super Bowl Sunday we can attend the free party. It should be big fun!
I also received an invitation to take part in a $150,000 blackjack tournament at The Paris hotel/casino on Feb. 24-26. I made a call and we're booked into a newly remodeled room for 3 nights at Paris -All Comped! Included is free entry into the tourney which has a top prize of $35,000. Is it a coincidence that the finals of the tourney happen on MY BIRTHDAY?

What a Week!
It's been quite a week here in LV with a strong winning streak at the gaming tables, but family health crisis that has raised our stress level.
Back in TC, Helen's sister Susan had been rushed to the hospital with internal bleeding. She underwent a successful operation yesterday and will remain hospitalized for a few days before going to a center where she can rest and undergo rehab. Susan fell in early November and broke her right arm and it's been a series of health problems ever since. Helen has been stressed and on the phone with family keeping updated on Susan's condition. Susan's arm is almost healed now and hopefully her health will continue to improve.
I've been playing poker and blackjack daily, though a bit less because of Susan's situation. It's been a winning streak...until last night's poker tourney. Some 55 players qualified for the Ballys freeroll tourney and I was pretty confident when it started. I won a couple of small pots early and had about 5,500 in chips in front of me when I got dealt K-K. A couple of guys called the $200 big blinds and I went all in, hoping to take down the pot. But I got called by a guy who had A-5. When an Ace hit the flop, I was in trouble. I was the third player out of the tourney and headed home.
But the day wasn't a total loss, since I won $580 in blackjack at Ballys.
Earlier this week, Helen and I saw a show - "The Bronx Wanderers" a family group - Dad and two sons, plus other players - who do a lot of early rock and doo-wop music. Dion and the Belmonts and the Four Seasons were some of their inspirations and they did a lot of their songs.
Also, I got some show tickets. We're going to see Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons on Feb. 18 and Rod Stewart on March 15. Looking forward to both of them!!

Stuff I've Seen Lately in Las Vegas
Over the past few days, I've seen things that were sort of interesting and I thought I'd pass a few on for your consideration.
On Saturday, while playing poker at Ballys, one guy busted out and left the table. His replacement...Santa Claus. Yep, a guy with a bushy white beard, big red coat and red hat bought in for $200 and began to play. Turns out he's a Southern California guy who just did a gig as Santa at a corporate party and now wanted to play poker. Kind of unusual trying to get a tell on the Jolly Old Elf, but I did take a few of his chips in two pots. He was so authentic-looking that 3 players at the table took selfies with him. Dogs playing poker, you see that. Santa playing poker, not so much.
Later Saturday, as I was leaving Ballys and driving home down the Strip, traffic slowed to a crawl. Turns out that there was a fender bender in front of the Mirage where a small car had its left front fender crumpled by one of those huge rolling billboard trucks advertising "Girls Right To Your Room." Not every day you get your car damaged by a rolling hooker sign...only in Vegas!
On Monday I was walking from Bellagio to Ballys across the bridge that connects the two casinos. I took an escalator down toward Ballys and at the bottom was a haggard-looking homeless woman who had staked out a panhandling spot near the bottom of the escalator. She sat cross legged and held a warn hand-scrawled sign that read "Homeless and Hungry. Please, Anything Would Help." She had a small pan with a scattering of loose change in front of her and a full backpack behind her. I was a bit sympathetic, until I noticed something next to her backpack. It was a tall Starbucks iced coffee, which carries a price tag near $5 or so, I think. So this hungry gal could have bought breakfast, but opted for her daily dose of cold caffeine. Where else but Vegas do the panhandlers sip Starbucks?
Yesterday I headed down to the Strip to play poker and I got stopped at a red light behind a huge silver Cadillac Escalade with dark tinted windows. I glanced at the Nevada license plate and it read "Celine 1." Curious, I changed lanes and stayed next to the Caddy and we both got caught at the next red light. Glanced over to see who was in the car and it was an older guy in a white shirt and tie, perhaps a chauffeur? No one else was in the car, so I assume he was running errands for the Canadian Song Bird.
And so our Vegas adventure continues...

Football Sunday & Poker Monday
Helen and I spent a quiet day at home on Sunday watching football.
And, of course, what's football without snacks? So I made a trip to the Middle Eastern Market to pick up a few things. The only problem was that the market doesn't open til 10 a.m. on Sunday and that's when the early NFL games kick off. So I planned it so I would be there right at 10 when they opened and get back to the apartment by 1030 and I'd only miss part of the first quarter in exchange for fresh pita bread, lebne, hummus and olives.
So I get to the market at 9:55 and park. I see a woman walk into the store, so I hop out of the car and stroll in. I was greeted by a feisty little woman who says "Not open, not open, no cash, no cash," in a thick eastern European accent. Turns out the cash trays had not arrived yet. Apparently the owners take home the register drawers every night and he hadn't yet arrived. Perhaps he had a late Saturday night and was running a bit slow.
I grabbed a basket and walked around the market getting my items and by the time I was done, the cash drawer had arrived and I was out of there and driving back to the apartment.
Helen and I watched the games, munching on our treats. She was also on the phone with relatives and friends, while I monitored by fantasy football teams. It was a good day, as I won both of my fantasy games and won a 4-team teaser bet that won me $50.
Over the weekend I had been having some problems with my laptop. I kept getting a message that my battery was low, even though I had the power cord plugged into the wall. A couple of times, it just went dark on me for now reason. So I drove over to the localBest Buy where the Geek Squad checked the power cord and it's working fine. So I decided to stop by and see our Vegas computer expert, Armando on Monday.
But first I had to play some poker at Ballys. I got there about 1030 and there were two seats in a game that had been going for some time. I could sit in the #3chair or the #7 chair. I took 7 and it was the right decision. It resulted in a GREAT poker session for me.
I bought in for $200 and 30 minutes later had about $240 in front of me when I was dealt the K-Q of hearts. The guy to my left bet $15 and I was one of 3 callers. The flop came A-J-3, giving me a shot at a straight. The better tossed another 15 in the pot and I was his only caller. The turn card was the 10 of clubs, giving me my straight. My opponent bet 30 and I raised it to 75. He called. The river was a 2, no apparent help to anyone. He checked and I went all in, shoving the remaining 150 into the pot. He didn't hesitate and called with sort of a sneer... I showed the straight and he showed A-J. He had flopped two pair.
That was the first of several big hands and big pots I won. I had 3 full houses, a couple of flushes and 3 or 4 trips that won for me. I had the biggest stack at the table for hours and was able to bully/bluff my way to 4-5 pots when my hand didn't connect. At the end of the day, I left with $600 profit.
On the way home, I stopped to see Armando and told him about my problem. He said to bring in the laptop and I probably will. Though ever since, it's been working great. So I may wait til it flares up again so he can see what happens. I also stopped at a local deli and pickedup a couple oftasty sandwiches for dinner. I opted for a hefty reuben and a California club with turkey, avocado, tomatoes, cheese and lettuce. and we shared both.
After dinner we watched "The Wolf of Wall Street," on our On Demand. Then it was time for bed. And today our adventure continues...

Poker Day at Ballys
Haven't played poker on The Strip in over a week, so it was time to head to Ballys.
Got there about 10 a.m. and no game was going at the time. I was hoping there would be overnight action still going on, since the National Rodeo is in town and those cowboys love their poker as much as they love their ponies.
I walked to the sports book and bought a $25 ticket on Western Michigan -16.5 points in the big game against Ohio U. Then it was back to the poker room where I sipped coffee and talked with a couple of dealers until a game got going at 10:30. I bought in for $100 and my stack went up a down a bit for about two hours. One guy at the other end of the table, let's call him The Villain, kept stealing pots $10 pots with $100 raises. No one had a hand good enough to call those big raises and he kept building his stack until he had more than $400 in front of him.
I had about $150 in front of me when I looked down and found both red ACES peeking back at me. The Villain bet $15 and everyone else folded until it got to me and I raised it to $30. The Villain looked at his stack and counted out $75, shoving it into the pot and announcing "raise" with a sneer.
I hemmed and hawed, knowing full well I was going to wager every one of my chips on those Aces.
After 30 seconds or so, I announced "All In" pushing my stack toward the pot.
"Please call, Please call, Please call," I thought to myself.
"I Call" said the Villain, flipping over A-Q of spades.
I showed my two aces and his face flinched. He knew he was in BIG trouble. His hand never improved and my aces brought me a pot of over $300. That was the final hand Villain played. He took his remaining chips and headed to the cashier.
That was the highlight of my poker trip. Before I headed home, I stopped by The Nosh deli at Ballys and picked up two salads for dinner - a Greek salad and a chef salad. Helen enjoyed the chef salad while I had the Greek. They were uh, just OK. Lots of lettuce and green, but not enough other items to make them really interesting.
While I was gone, Helen was on the phone with sister Nat. She also opened a birthday package from Scott, Lisa and family. It's a bunch of lotions and beauty products.
We watched Western Michigan win the exciting game 29-23. My ticket was a loser, but it was fun watching the Broncos win the MAC title.

Happy Birthday to Her
Thursday was Helen's birthday and we celebrated by going to dinner at her favorite eatery - The Cheesecake Factory.
We got there about 5 p.m. and by 5:15 we were greeted and seated by our waiter, Shawn. After ordering drinks, we perused the menu. Helen usually gets her favorite Southwest BBQ Chicken Salad, but today she went with something different, Steak Diane. I opted for a medium-rare ribeye.
Soon after ordering, Helen started getting phone calls and texts from family. Brother Norman called from So Cal, sister Susan called from TC, grandson Stephen texted from Houston, grandson Alan texted from So Cal. It was a flurry of communications for the Birthday Girl.
After a few minutes our meals arrived. Helen's steak was a cut into beef medallions and topped with grilled mushrooms and onions that had been sautéed in a wine sauce. A generous order of mashed potatoes rounded out the hearty platter. My ribeye was done perfectly and came with another heaping order of mashed potatoes and perfectly steamed green beans.
Shawn came repeatedly to check on us and refill our drinks. I mentioned that we were celebrating Helen's Birthday, hoping we might get a free slab of cheesecake for the occasion.
After our meals, Shawn and another server brought Helen a free small-sized chocolate sundaes and serenaded her with a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday To You." She was appropriately embarrassed, but was a good sport. I know she hates that limelight, but she took it well.
We were both too full for dessert at the time, but we got two slabs of cheesecake for later. Helen chose the Turtle cheesecake, while I went with the Red Velvet cheesecake. We got home about 6:30 and didn't feel ready to try the desserts until after 9. They were delicious, rich and filling. Neither of us could finish them!
Before leaving for dinner, I visited, and lost at, both local casinos - Rampart and Red Rock. Dropped $65 at Rampart and another $25 at Red Rock. We'll try to get that back, with interest, in the next day or two.

Rampart Visit and '17 Masters Odds
Rolled over to the Rampart Casino this morning for a brief blackjack session.
Helen hasn't been doing well lately and I don't leave her for very long, but she insisted that I go out for an hour or two. So I went to Rampart, arriving about 9:30 and planning to play til 11 or so.
When I walked in the casino was dead quiet. They only had two BJ tables going and only 1 player at them. So I sat down and the empty table and bought in for $200. Got off to a rough start and was down to 100 when I got hot and rolled off 4-5 hands in a row. After 45 minutes I was up $350 and left.
Before I left I bought a moneyline parlay ticket on College Hoops. I need Michigan, Louisville and Virginia to win and it will pay $105.
Also - for you golf fans - I picked up a sheet on the 2017 Masters set for April 6-9.
Here are a few favorites and other notables.
Jason Day 7-1
Jordan Spieth 8-1
Rory McIlroy 10-1
Dustin Johnson 12-1
Bubba Watson 15-1
Adam Scott 20-1
Tiger Woods 60-1
Ernie Els 200-1
Fred Couples 250-1
Kiradech Aphibarnrat 250-1 (Not a jumble puzzle, but a real golfer, I guess. Not an athlete, a golfer)

Football Weekend and Strangeness at Red Rock
We had a very low-key weekend with the focus on watching FB at home.
Helen has had a few rough days health-wise. She's feeling weak and I just didn't feel good about leaving her alone for more than a few minutes. So on Saturday we watched the Michigan-OSU game and, of course, weren't happy with the outcome.
Then on Sunday we watched the Raiders knock off Carolina and that turned out much better for us members of the Raider Nation. I won both of my fantasy league games and now have a firm grip on first place in both leagues.
I lost a couple of football bets when Seattle went down, but I also had a pair of winners for a profit of $150.I hit a 5-team teaser of Western Michigan, U of Washington, Penn State, Wisconsin and USC for $100 and also connected on a 9-team teaser of the Vikings, Redskins, Steelers, WMU, U-M, Bills, Saints, Giants and Patriots. That one pays $175.
So this morning I went over to Red Rock to cash the tickets and when I walked in the place was kind of spooky.
All the video games were black. All the large screens in the sports book were dark. No music was playing. There were ceiling lights and power in the food court, but everywhere else was out of power. I walked around to the blackjack pits and the dealers were just sitting around - no cards were in the air. I talked to a maintenance guy and he said the partial power outage had lasted about 3 hours already and no sign when it would end. Pretty strange to see a big casino absolutely silent.
And so our LV adventure continues...

Thanksgiving in LV
Helen and I marked Thanksgiving in Vegas with a trip to the Red Rock Casino's impressive buffet.
Our plan was to eat relatively early since I was to play in Bally's Free Roll Poker Tourney at 6 p.m. More on that later.
We arrived at the buffet about 11:30 a.m. and had about a 20-minute wait to get seated. The meal was $19.95 per person, but because I am at the President Level as a player, we got 50% off. And I was able to use comp points to cover the cost, so basically it was a FREE Thanksgiving Day dinner. I filled both of our plates with turkey, mashed potatoes, ham, cranberry sauce, broccoli and more. Then for dessert I had a slice of Boston cream pie and a piece of carrot cake. Helen had a chocolate brownie type pastry and a slice of cheesecake. It was a really nice way to mark the day. No muss, no fuss - eat and waddle away.
At the sports book we checked some football scores, then headed home. I had bought a 3-team money line teaser ticket of EMU, Detroit and Dallas and that was a winner for $114.
Helen was on the phone with Anna about 4 p.m. when I left for the poker tourney. It's a weekly event that is free for anyone who logs 12 hours of play during the week. I had posted 13 hours, so was looking forward to playing, since they pay the last 20 players $300 each. Last night there were 48 players who started.
Each player starts with 5,000 in play chips. I got off to a slow start, losing a couple of hands and was quickly down to 3,500 when I got dealt A-5, both diamonds. There was 600 in the pot when I decided to try to take it down with a big bet and went all in, expecting everyone to fold. But I got called by one guy who shoved his3,500 into the pot and flipped over Q-Q. I needed some help and got it on the flop when an ACE hit the board. My aces held up and left the guy with only 300 in chips and he was knocked out a few hands later.
My stack was now just over 7,000, the highest on the table and I just sort of coasted through at that point as the number of players dwindled to 38, 32 and 23 when we took a 10-minute break. I won a couple of small pots with Q-Q when a Q hit the flop and another little pot when my 5-5 were joined by a third 5 on the flop. After the break it only took another 15 minutes for the final 3 players to get knocked out and we lined up to collect our $300.
It wasn't all profit however...I dropped 50 in blackjack while waiting for the poker tourney to begin.
Drove home and watched a little TV with Helen who spent her afternoon relaxing and talking with his sister Nat and a couple of friends. It was a fun day for us and now our adventure continues...

Bellagio Conservatory Visit
Helen and I took a trip to the local Target store to pick up a few items this morning, then went down to the Strip to check out the Fall Display at the Bellagio Conservatory.
Visiting the B's conservatory is one of our annual highlights in LV. It's so interesting and amazing what these guys can do with thousands of flowers and plants. It's always different and always worth seeing. This year's Fall Display ends on Friday. It's the first time we've seen a fall display, since we're usually not here til the Winter Display goes up in early December. Then in Feb. it's Chinese New Year's Display and then the Spring Display before we head home.

Weekend Update!
I've found that Saturdays are usually good days to play poker in Las Vegas. A lot of weekend visitors are in town to try their hand at the game and it's often a good opportunity to stack up some winnings.
So on Saturday I visited Ballys with two thoughts in mind - play some poker and log a few hours toward the weekly free roll tourney on Thursday night. Got down there about 10a.m hoping there would be an overnight game with a lot of bleary-eyed players from the night before. But, the poker room was dead. No game, so I looked for a blackjack table to kill some time and make some $$$.
Found an empty $15 table and played heads-up against the dealer for about 45 minutes and won $200. Went back to check on the poker room and there were3 guys waiting to play. I hung around for about 10 minutes and two more players arrived, so we got a game going shortly after 11. I bought in for $100, won a couple of hands early and was just playing solid poker for about 3 hours. No huge pots, but built my stack up to $175 or so.
There was a mouthy guy from New York sitting on my right and he was obnoxious with a Capital O!!
He and another player split a $200 pot when they both had J-10 and hit full houses. Both had each put about half of the cash in the pot and basically got their money back. But the NY guy just wouldn't quit whining about how he felt he should have taken the pot. His bad luck, etc. And then he got into an argument with a guy from Texas over which state had the most money, Texas or New York.
"Effing Wall Street has more money than all of Texas, combined," said the Loudmouth. He went on that rant several times before the dealer finally asked him to tone it down. The Texan was very patient and the issue died down.
Then I got dealt a K-Q of spades and when a guy bet $10, I called, along with one other player. Flop comes K of hearts, J of spades, 10 of diamonds. Gives me top pair of K, plus 3 big spades. Original bettor bets $35 and I think about what he might have. A-Q would give him a straight or he could have A-A. But he only bet 10 before the flop, so I put him on a smaller pair, maybe 9-9. And I do have an open end straight draw and top pair, so I decide to shove in my whole stack....All in.
I get called by both other guys! The pot is more than $500 when the turn card comes...Queen of hearts...giving me two pair- kings and queens. River card is a harmless 3 of clubs. We show our cards and my two pair is beaten by the original better who had Q-Q and hit trips on the flop. The other guy had A-9 of hearts and missed his flush draw on the river.
So left poker with a 100 loss and went back to bj where I played for about an hour, winning another $260 before calling it a day and driving home.
Helen spent her day catching up on some of her favorite shows via On Demand. She also talked and texted with family and friends, plus got our laundry done. She had a lot of energy and it was a good day for her MS-wise. Dinner was middle eastern food. After a little TV, it was time to sleep.
Up early Sunday to get a good seat at the Red Rock sports book for NFL action. I got over there about 9 a.m. for the 10 a.m. games and the place was already packed. Not a seat to be had! And there had to be about 30 people standing in the betting line. So I picked out a few parlays and teasers before joining the others in line. Here's what I bet:
A $25 "Ties Win" parlay of Lions -6, Vikings Pick 'Em, Dolphins -2 and Raiders -6. If Oakland can win by a TD, this one pays $250. Thought this one was lost when Miami trailed 10-0 late in the 4th quarter, but Miami pulled it out.
A $25 teaser of Titans +8, Bills +8, Cowboys -2, Steelers -3and Seahawks -1. WINNER pays $125.
A $50 mega-teaser of Bills +11, Steelers Pick em, Patriots -5 and Seahawks +2. WINNER pays $100.
And I have a $25 teaser played at Paris that I played last Thursday of CAROLINA/NEW ORLEANS UNDER58, MSU +30, Dolphins+7, Patriots -5, Seahawks +2 and Raiders +2. This one will pay $87.50 if the Raiders come through
This shapes up as one of my best FB weeks in a LONG time, especially if the Raiders can Win big!!
Since I couldn't get a seat at the sports book, I stood and watched the first half of the early games and soaked up the excitement that is so vibrant at a Vegas Sports Book on an NFL Sunday. You have people cheering on every play with every game on the huge screens to make viewing such a treat. Every turnover has someone cheering and someone else groaning! Every TD triggers the same cheers and jeers! Lots of fun.
But at halftime, I wandered over to the BJ tables and found one where I could watch two NFL games on nearby TVs. I watched the Cowboys game and the Miami game while keeping an eye on my BJ cards. Luckily I had a nice hot streak in BJ and posted a $330 profit in just over an hour. The early games were ending and took home some Chinese food for dinner -orange chicken, fried rice and steamed veggies.
At home, Helen was watching a movie, so I logged on to check out my fantasy football teams. Won my game in one league and was leading in the other until last night when my foe got 3 tds from Washington QB. So tonight I trailed by 9 points, but have two Raider receivers and their kicker going for me. I am favored and hope to win. It's been a good fantasy season for me...first place in both leagues.
And so our LV adventure continues...

Strip Trip
Spent part of Thursday morning unpacking items and getting the apartment in living condition. It takes a few days to get everything in order and get all the groceries we need.
About 9:30 I drove down to the Strip, parking at Ballys and walking to Paris for my first blackjack session of the day. Played for about 45 minutes and ground out a profit of $207. Part of the time I played alone and for about 20 minutes I played with a Marine who was there to organize a Marine Ball at Paris. He was a 20-year veteran who said he'd stay in The Corps if he made SGT Major in his next promotion.
After pocketing my winnings, I went to the sports book and made a couple of fb bets, A Super Teaser of Carolina/NO under 58, MSU+30, Dolphins +7,Patriots-5, Seahawks +2 and Raiders +2. This one pays $87.50. The other one is a Money Line Parlay where the teams just have to win - Panthers, Chiefs, Giants, Cowboys and Dolphins. This one will pay $417.
Walked from Paris next door to Planet Hollywood where I played blackjack for about 2 hours. One big hand took place when I was up about $120 and was playing two hands at $40 each. I got a 7-3 on one hand and a 6-4 on the other when the dealer showed a 5. I had to double down on both hands, getting a 7 on the first and a 10 on the second. The dealer flipped his hole card, a Queen, then slapped a 7 on it for 22 and a nice $160 win!!!
I left PH with a profit of $277 and decided to run an errand at The Venetian. Drove down there and bought tickets to see Willie Nelson on Feb. 1. He's doing a limited run of only 5 shows and Helen and I will enjoy that one.
On the way home, I stopped by the Middle Eastern market that we like and picked up dinner - hummus, feta cheese, tabouli, lebne, Kalamata olives and fresh pita bread. That was dinner.
While I was gone, Helen was really busy, washing all the dishes and kitchen utensils that had been packed away and dusty. She really overdid it a bit and was tired after hours of work. She also was texting and talking with family and friends. After dinner we watched some TV and called it a day.

Settled in...FINALLY!
We're finally settled in to our apartment in LV, but it wasn't quite as smooth as it could have been!
To catch up on our adventures, we left Traverse City at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10. Made our way through the morning darkness and were excited as we headed south. Some 12 hours later we stopped for the night at a Hampton Inn in Lebanon Missouri. After the long drive, we were happy that we packed couple of Gobbler sandwiches from Mary's Kitchen Port and we enjoyed them for dinner in our room.
On Friday we hit the road again about 6 and rolled through Oklahoma and into the Texas panhandle before stopping for the night in Amarillo. The travel was flawless and we made great time with speed limits of 75 and 80 through OK and Texas. We stayed at Comfort Inn that was undergoing some upgrades, but we had a good night's rest before taking off on Saturday, bound for Flagstaff, AZ.
I had calculated that we'd get to Flag about 5 p.m. and we expected to spend the night there, but we must have made great time (or I miscalculated) and we got there shortly before 1 p.m. Helen suggested we just drive on to Vegas, about 4 hours, and I was in complete agreement. She also suggested I call the Red Rock hotel/casino. I had made us reservations there for Sunday and Monday nights and she thought they might be able to add Saturday at no problem.
But when I called I learned the only rooms available would be $250 a night even though our Sunday/Monday nights were only$69 each, so we opted for Plan B. I called Bally's and because of my Diamond Player status I got a FREE room, totally comped overlooking the Strip. We got there about 5 and settled into a great refurbished room on the 5th floor. Dinner was a couple of salads at the Nosh deli - Helen had a Greek salad, while I opted for Chicken Caesar. Then she rested in the room, while I played some blackjack, winning $40.
One sidenote about hotels and their rates -- we paid roughly $135 and $145 for our nights in Lebanon Missouri and Amarillo Texas. These were Hampton Inn and Comfort Inns, nice enough, but not deluxe accomodations. I got us two nights at the RED ROCK for $155 in total! OK, rant over!
On Sunday we drove out to Red Rock and checked into a STUNNING room on the 8th floor. Even though I had played there hundreds of times, this was our first time staying there and it was very nice. Our room had some cool amenities, including a TV screen built right into the expansive bathroom mirror. Very nice watching ESPN while doing the morning bathroom ritual!
Helen settled in while I went down to play bj and poker. I had two great blackjack sessions, winning 930 before taking a break and going up to check on Helen. No HUGE hands, just a steady compiling of wins. It was Sunday and I had 4 football parlays & teasers of $20 each. They all lost, thanks to 3 underachievers - Packers, Patriots and Chiefs!
After the games ended, I posted another $733 profit during a bj session. Again no huge hands, but steady wins. So for the day I did almost $1600...pretty sweet start to the trip!
Monday was our last day there and we had some errands to take care of. Gassed up the car and washed off the dead bugs and grime from some 2,300 miles on the road. I talked with the movers who confirmed our move on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Visited the local Cox Cable store and arranged for service to hook up our TV & internet. Also stopped by the apartment and let them know we were in town and would be there at 9a.m. sharp on Tuesday to get the keys. Still found time to play some bj and poker at Red Rock.
Key hand took place in Poker. I was dealt A-Q, both hearts and bet $15, getting two callers. Flop comes 7 and 9 of clubs, and the Q of Spades. I had top pair with an Ace kicker. A guy bet $30 and the other guy called. I knew my move and made it ...All in For $240, not expecting either of the others to call. I figured I had the best hand with the Queens and Ace Kicker and didn't want to let either of the guys hit a straight or flush without paying for it. Both had about $250 or so in chips, so they would be betting almost their whole stack.
Sure enough, they both hemmed and hawed, then shoved in their chips. We all showed our hands...one guy had A-King, both clubs. The other had J-10, both clubs. THEY WERE BOTH DRAWING TO A FLUSH! Turn came a 3of hearts and the river was a beautiful 2 of spades!
My queens won and the dealer shoved the pot of almost $700 in my direction!!
I ended poker with a win of $630, but had two losses in bj of $120 and $50 on Monday night.
We left Red Rock shortly after 7 on Tuesday morning and met the movers at 8. The got our belongings out of storage and we got to the apartment just before 9, so we had to wait a while to get the keys.
While getting the keys, the complex maintenance guy came up and apologized about the carpets. I didn't know what he was talking about, but it turns out the carpets had not been cleaned and were pretty dingy. They had carpet cleaners coming, so our movers brought in our furniture and boxes and stacked it all in non-carpeted parts of the apartment - the kitchen, bathroom and out on the small veranda. The only items in the carpeted areas were the bed, futon and dining room table. Just as the movers were leaving, the carpet guys were showing up, just after 10 a.m.
It was stressful and I complained to management. The assistant manager of the complex, Jose, apologized profusely for the carpet mixup and gave us a $200 credit toward our Dec. rent, so that was a nice gesture.
While the carpet cleaners were there, Helen and I left and killed some time, then had lunch at a Mexican restaurant, El Burrito, where we enjoyed a lunch special. We both had a chicken & guacamole burrito, rice and beans, a tasty bowl of pasta & veggie soup and beverage for only $10. Then it was back to the apartment where the carpet cleaners were done, but the floor was a bit damp. It dried quickly, then Cox came and got our technology online about 4 p.m.
It was a long day moving in and we still have lots to unpack. I need to get groceries, with COFFEE at the top of the shopping list! And so our LV adventure continues!!

Heading Home
After four VERY fun months, our LV adventure is just about over.
Tomorrow morning the movers are coming to haul our belongings to the storage unit I rented a couple of weeks ago. They are supposed to be here about 7 a.m., so by 9 or 10 we expect to be on the road heading back to Traverse City. Depending on our departure time, we will drive to Flagstaff or maybe a bit further before stopping for the night. Our ETA for TC will be either Friday or Saturday, depending on weather and traffic.
It's been a great winter for us. Just a few of the highlights include:
Visits from friends and family. We got to have some LV fun with Tricia and Kevin Wright, Norman and Lorraine Hajjar, Nick and Lois Edson, John and Janet Tune and our son Scott. All of the visits were tooooo short and we hope we can do them all again next year!
Some outstanding shows - John Fogerty, Hitzville Motown Revue, Million Dollar Quartet (4 TIMES), Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson One and LOVE.
Several great poker games, including cashing 5 times out of 9 entries in Ballys free roll poker tournaments. Also many more winning blackjack sessions than losing sessions.
It's been a great winter, but now we're looking forward to getting back to Michigan. We're planning on returning, perhaps in November, so our LV adventures will continue...

It's Been A While
Looking at the last blog posting, it's been a full month since I posted a report about our LV adventures.
There's no big reason, other than I just got lazy and out of the routine of sharing our tales. Here's a brief look at what we have been doing.
One highlight happened two weeks ago when Helen's brother Norman and his wife Lorraine drove over from Thousands Oaks, CA and visited. They only spent one night, but we had some fun and laughs during the time they were here. They stayed at the Venetian and we joined them for some good food at the Grand Lux Café. Norman and I watched hoops and hockey at the sports book, while Helen and Lorraine toured the Grand Canal Shops.
Gambling-wise, March has been an up and down month. I've played both poker and blackjack but no major wins or losses. Yesterday, for example, I played about 4 hours of poker at Ballys and won $80.
A few days ago Helen was feeling really weak and warm. Turns out she had a sinus infection and her fever rose to 101, which has a HUGE impact on her MS. After a bit of a medical run-around from her doc, she was able to get a prescription for an antibiotic and within hours her temperature was down and she was feeling better. She's feeling much better now.
She really wanted to get well, because tonight we have tickets to see Rod Stewart at Caesars Palace. It's a show we've both been looking forward to seeing. And on Friday we have tickets for LOVE, the Beatles show at the Mirage. They have recently revised the show, adding new elements, and we're looking forward to see how it changed since we saw it last year.
We're winding down our trip and our estimated departure day is next Tuesday, the 29th. Well, it's more than estimated, since we have movers coming to get all our stuff and haul it to the storage unit that I rented last week. We're looking forward to getting back to Michigan, though it's been a VERY FUN winter here, highlighted by visits from the Edsons, the Tunes, the Wrights and Norman and Lorraine.
I'll try to do a better job with the blog as our visit here wraps up and our LV adventures continues...

Great Fun With Great Friends
The past few days have been a whirlwind of fun as longtime friends Nick and Lois Edson and John and Janet Tune joined us in LV.
Last Thursday Nick and Lois flew in from Traverse City, while John and Janet drove 9 hours from their home in Green Valley, AZ. We had great fun Thursday night, talking, laughing and having dinner at Bally's. On Friday, Helen and I checked in to Bally's, enjoying two nights comped. We were in room 5605 in the Jubilee Tower with a partial strip view. It was a nice, comfortable room, specially adapted for Helen's handicapped needs.
Friday we did a little gambling, visited a couple other casinos and enjoyed an Italian dinner at Bally's. Then we went to Mandalay Bay where we had tickets for the Michael Jackson - One show. It's a cirque de soleil show with lots of MJ music, dancing and acrobatics. While we weren't familiar with most of the music, it was still impressive. Before the show, we played some video poker at Mandalay Bay and I hit a nice hand. After a nondescript deal, I kept an ACE and was dealt THE OTHER THREE ACES! That lucky stroke earned me $100. Not five minutes later, John WAS DEALT A STRAIGHT FLUSH! We were high-fiving our good luck!!
We spent most of Saturday at the Bellagio Sports Book in a comfy sort of living room area with couches, chairs and a coffee table in the center. The six of us took over this spot and it was really nice. The guys bet hoops games and cheered them on, while Helen and Lois made horse racing bets. They were ON FIRE. Lois hit with a 50-1 longshot, while Helen picked a 49-1winner. What a fun day we had before heading over to Caesar's Palace Forum Shops were we had dinner at the Cheesecake Factory.
John and Janet left early Sunday to drive back to AZ, so Helen and I joined Nick and Lois for another fun day at the Bellagio sports book. We met there at 8:30 for coffee and muffins and spent the whole day laughing and betting games. It was fun for all. For dinner, I drove us down to The Venetian where we looked around before settling in to eat at one of our favorites, Grand Lux Café. Nick and I enjoyed some great steaks, while Helen and Lois each had chicken pot pies. It was a great meal, ending a great day. After dinner, Helen and I said goodbye to the Edsons who were flying out Monday morning. We drove back to our apartment, arriving in time to watch Downton Abbey, one of our favorites.
It was such a fun time, we all talked about making it an annual trip. It was John and Janet's first visit to LV and they enjoyed it enough to return next year. Nick and Lois liked The Venetian so much that they are talking about staying there again next Feb. Helen and I are already looking forward to their return.
And so our LV adventure continues...

"Is That Your Granddaughter?"
On Friday I made the drive to Bally's to log some poker time.
Got there about 10 a.m. and didn't get a game going for about 30 minutes. It was up and down with no dramatic hands. I played for three hours taking a break to grab a roast beef sandwich at Earl of Sandwich at Planet Hollywood. I wanted to get a little walking in and they make a great grilled sandwich with tangy horseradish sauce that is worth twice the price. I took my sandwich to the sports book and watched some sports while I ate.
Then it was time to get back to the poker game at Ballys. As I left PH, I noticed a crowd waiting to cross the Strip from PH to Bellagio. A guy carrying a big sign that said "Jesus is the Savior" and "The End is Coming" and a couple other phrases was causing a commotion and yelling at a guy who looked to be 70 if he was a day.
Old Guy was waiting for the light to change and hanging on his arm was a 20-something bit of arm candy who wore a SHORT skirt, 6-inch stiletto heels and a smile.
"IS THAT YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER?" screamed Sign Guy. "IS THAT YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER?"
Old Guy didn't respond.
Sign guy kept shouting 8 or 10 times until the light changed and Old Guy and his "friend" crossed over toward Bellagio. I headed back to Ballys and resumed poker. I ended up losing $60 for the day while logging about 5 hours of play. No highlights at the table. Certainly nothing as entertaining as the street incident I had watched.

Poker Tourney - Cashed Again!
Drove down to Bally's for the regular Wednesday night freeroll tourney.
But before leaving the house, Helen and I talked with Scott who was undergoing back surgery for a herniated disc. He was in good spirits and will be glad to get his back troubles repaired, but is not looking forward to being limited for four to six weeks. And today is his birthday, so we'll talk to him later today after he leaves the hospital.
I needed just over 3 hours of live cash game play by 5 p.m. to qualify for the 6 p.m. tournament, so I got down there about 10 a.m. and played til just past 1 to get the time in. It was an up-and-down session and I finished with a profit of $25. No huge hands, no dramatic losses. Just patiently ground out a slight profit.
Then I played a little BJ at Bally's, winning $75, followed by a walk over to Paris where I played some more BJ and won another $260 in about 90 minutes. So it was time for a late lunch, slice of pizza and an ice tea from Sbarro in the basement of Ballys. I still had about an hour to kill before the 6p.m. tourney, so I found a 25-cent Haywire machine and played for almost 30 minutes on $20. It went Haywire a couple times, but for only 20 credits and nothing too big.
"Jubilee" the extravagant showgirl show at Bally's is holding its last performance tonight after 30+ years. Ballys set up a photo area where folks could get their pic taken with a real showgirl, not one of the fake showgirls who prowl the strip trying to get tourists to donate in exchange for a photo. Jubilee is a Vegas tradition that is fading away. It's just too expensive to operate any longer, say hotel officials. No word on what might replace this icon.
When the poker tourney started there were 74 entrants, a larger than normal group. During the first two rounds, I was pretty aggressive, raising and stealing blinds. I had one big hand when I got dealt A-K. Two guys ahead of me, both with smaller stacks, went all in and I followed suit. One guy had A-Q, one had K-Q. When an Ace hit the flop, I knocked out both of them, whittling the field and building my stack.
After 100 minutes of play, there is a 10-minute break in the action. At that point, there were 37 players left with an average stack of 8,500 chips. I had a healthy stack of 14,000 and felt pretty good. When play resumes, players began falling out quickly and my stack grew. When the field was whittled to 20 winners, I had a pile of 37,000 chips when the average stack was only 17,000. An easy $300 for me, bringing my daily profit to $640.
While I was playing, Helen was on the phone, talking with friends and family about Scott's situation. When I got home, about 9:15 we shared some Ghiradelli chocolates and watched a little TV before bedtime.

Visit Red Rock to Watch MSU
On Tuesday, Helen and I visited Red Rock casino's comfortable sports book to watch the Spartans tangle with Purdue. I bought a $25 ticket at MSU +1.5, so I was able to cash, even though MSU lost by 1 in overtime. What a game! MSU down by 18 in the second half, but managed to take a 4-point lead with less than 2 minutes to play. Then have it decided in OT by a poor foul call with 5 seconds to play. Aaaargh.
Anyway, during the game, Helen and I shared a large order of fries, then opted for some mini-hotdogs wrapped in pretzels. Not very nutritious, but still tasty.
Learned last night that Scott will apparently need back surgery for a herniated disc. So sorry that our boy will have to undergo that, but hopefully it will take care of his back woes.
On Sunday, I watched the Superbowl at home with Helen. I went to the local grocery store and stocked up on snacks and salads and we just enjoyed the game. I had been to Red Rock early in the day and it was crazy busy. No place to sit and lines everywhere. So it was nice to watch the game at home. My buddy Terry cashed a $100 futures ticket on Denver at 8-1 odds that I bought for him in December! GREAT Pick T!!
Today I'll be going to Ballys to log 3 more hours needed to play in tonight's free roll poker tourney. I cashed last week and will try to snag another $300 tonight.
And so our adventure continues...
Anyway, during the game, Helen and I shared a large order of fries, then opted for some mini-hotdogs wrapped in pretzels. Not very nutritious, but still tasty.

Packers & Cardinals - 10 to 1
Bengals -14 to 1

Big Game in LV
It's been about a week since we last posted, so it's time to catch up a bit.
After Tricia and Kevin left town, Helen and I settled back into our routine. It was great fun having them visit and we're now looking forward to our next visitors, the Edsons from Traverse City and the Tunes from Arizona. They will all be here in two weeks. Nick and Lois are staying at Bellagio, while John and Janet are across the Strip at Ballys. Helen and I have two nights comped on Ballys on the 19th and 20th. Should be great fun!
The buzz here in Vegas is about The Big Game. Sports books are busy with bettors, mostly who are putting down cash on Carolina. The odds have been steadily climbing from Carolina -4 to 4.5, 5, 5.5 and 6. I have $25 on Carolina -5 and may get some action on a few prop bets. Some of them I am considering are:
Shortest TD over 1.5 yards
First score a FG
CJ Anderson total receiving yards over 13.5
CJ Anderson total receptions over 1.5
Greg Olsen total receptions over 5.5
Cam Newton to score at least one TD
Will Panthers Score in All 4 Quarters - Yes
Total QB Sacks by both teams Over 5
Largest lead by either team - under 13.5
I think it will be a defensive game for the first half with the first score a FG. With the solid Carolina defense, Manning will use his safety valve CJ Anderson 4 or 5 times. Likewise, Cam Newton will look for Greg Olsen about 10 times over the course of the game. I see Carolina taking a 13-10 halftime lead, but then pulling away in the second half, scoring in both the 3rd and 4th quarters to build a 26-13 lead. With Peyton forced to pass to catch up, he gets sacked 4 times in the second half. Denver gets a late TD and Carolina tacks on a late FG to make the final score 29-20.
Helen has been feeling a bit under the weather lately, so we haven't been doing much outside the apartment together. She's been on the phone with friends and family and catching up on some movies on TV. We've both been enjoying Downton Abbey on Sunday nights. We've also been watching some basketball together. Usually we go to a sports book to see hoops, but she just hasn't felt good enough to go out lately.
My card playing has continued to reap profits. For the month of January, I had 28 winning days and only 3 losing days. Yes, I played every single day! And so far in Feb, it's been more of the same with four winning days and NO losing days. This winter has been an extraordinary run of good fortune. Part of the success is due to the fact that I have a bankroll that lets me hang in there when I lose early. There have been several sessions where I get down early, but hang in there until the cards turn my way and press up bets when they do.

Fun With Tricia and Kevin
Helen and I have spent the last two days having fun showing off Las Vegas to our visitors, Tricia and Kevin.
On Thursday morning we drove to the Mirage and met up with them about 10 a.m. They had enjoyed a breakfast at Denny's, right across Las Vegas Blvd from their room. We decided to check out some of the casinos, so a walk down the Strip soon began. Our first stop was The Venetian and a tour of the Canal Shoppes. They were really impressed by the beauty and luxury of The V. Helen and Tricia spent about an hour browsing in a special Las Vegas gift shop where they looked a lot and bought little.
Then we headed south on the Strip, stopping at Harrah's and The Linq, before checking out the High Roller. We didn't ride the giant ferris wheel, but walked right up to it and it's pretty impressive. Along the way, we stopped at the Ghiradelli chocolate shop where I stocked up on treats for Helen and me.
Continuing south, we walked past Cromwell and Ballys, stopping at Paris to check it out. Kevin and Tricia were seeing all the sights and taking pics along the way. After Paris, we visited Planet Hollywood, where Tricia and Helen spent two hours shopping in the Miracle Mile shops. Meanwhile Kevin and I were getting thirsty, so I sat at a blackjack table and we enjoyed a couple of $1 beers while I played and Kevin watched. He's not quite confident enough to play live bj yet, but that's OK. We all have to learn at some point.
The session started well and I was playing one-on-one with the dealer, Chun. Then a woman who didn't know the game very well came and changed all the cards. I immediately lost all my profit and some. I had to rebuy for $100 and eventually the woman left and two couples joined us. Things went well and after about an hour, I left with a profit of $185.
Kevin and I still had time to kill before we had to meet with the girls, so we visited the Planet Hollywood sports book. Kevin wanted to bet on the Super Bowl and bought a $20 ticket on Under 45 points. I put $25 on Carolina -5 and then we left to meet up with Helen and Tricia. By this time it was almost 4 p.m. and we were getting hungry. Kevin and Tricia wanted to try a Vegas buffet and the PH has one of the best for the money, so we went down there. As we checked it, the lady at the register asked if I was a Total Rewards member and I showed her my platinum card. She checked my points and we were able to comp the $120 meal. WINNER!!
We all enjoyed the buffet, eating too much and still saving room for dessert. Then it was time to waddle back to Mirage where Kevin and Tricia had tickets for a 7 p.m. performance of "LOVE," the great Beatles tribute. Helen and I said goodnight and made the drive back to our apartment. It was a full day!
On Friday, we drove back to Mirage, meeting up with Kevin and Tricia at 9:30 to start our adventures. They both loved "LOVE" and talked about it a lot as we drove. Our first stop was south to see the famous "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. We took several photos at the site, which was pretty busy with visitors. Then we drove north on the Strip and I took them to see the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, made famous from Pawn Stars. It's in a shabby area of the Strip, surrounded by cheap hotels and several infamous Wedding Chapels where you can get married by an Elvis imitator or even while sitting in your car at a drive-through window.
Then we rolled west on Charleston Avenue, our destination: Red Rock Canyon National Area.
We've taken several visitors to Red Rock and they are always impressed by the mountainous terrain and colorful rock formations. Our first stop was the visitors center where Helen and Tricia explored the gift shop, while Kevin and I looked at the informative displayed. Then we spent over an hour driving and parking along the 13-mile road that takes you through the park. We saw some adventurous knuckleheads climbing up the shear rock faces and swore we'd never do that!
Kevin and I had built up a powerful thirst and we decided to visit Yard House, an eatery at the Red Rock Casino. It was a late lunch for us and we enjoyed it. Helen, Tricia and I opted for tasty burgers, while Kevin devoured a platter of four sliders. Some tasty craft beers washed down the good food.
I gave them a quick tour of the Casino, which has become my go-to place when I don't visit the Strip for gaming.
After a while, we drove back to Mirage and hung out for a while. We walked to Harrah's where I played blackjack, winning $89 while Helen, Tricia and Kevin watched me play. I thought they might be bored, but they said they enjoyed watching me stack the chips! Even though they have a Volcano-View room, Kevin and Tricia had not yet seen the volcano show. So we planned to see the 8 p.m. show and about 7:45 headed out to get a good viewing spot. It was an impressive 10-minute display and the volcano throws off a good amount of heat!
Then it was time for us to say our goodbyes, ending a fun-filled trip for Tricia and Kevin. Helen and I drove home, tired but happy. Kevin and Tricia fly back to Detroit today. They'll take a shuttle bus to McCarron Airport at 11:45 in preparation for their 2 p.m. flight. They should arrive in Detroit about 10:30, if all goes well. There's already talk of them coming back to celebrate Christmas with us in December. I hope that works out, it would be GREAT fun.

Visitors!!
Scott rolled into LV on Monday about 5p.m. and by 8 we were at Harrah's enjoying the "Million Dollar Quartet" show.
It's 90 minutes of rock-a-billy music and fun as the play details a day in 1955 at Sun Records when owner Sam Phillips got his four stars - Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis - together for some great music. Helen and I had seen it a couple weeks ago and thought Scott would enjoy it. We were right.
It was great to see Scott, who had been in Phoenix to accept an award Sunday. He drove up to see us on Monday, then Tuesday morning had to fly back to Grand Rapids. He got back to Michigan about 1030 on Tuesday, then had to drive to Detroit for a Wednesday morning surgery that he attends to aid the physicians using his company's cardiac devices. He travels A LOT!
Then yesterday our niece Tricia and her husband Kevin arrived for their first LV visit about 2:30 p.m. or so. Helen and I picked them up from the airport and gave them a brief tour of the Strip before taking them to the Mirage where they are staying. During the check-in, Tricia asked about the possibility of a free upgrade. The four of us went up to their room on the 19th floor and they have a GREAT view overlooking the famous Mirage Volcano and the Strip.
After checking out their room, we visited the Beatles Gift Shop at the Mirage. Kevin is a big Beatles fan and they are going to see "Love" tonight. At the gift shop, Helen bought a Sgt. Pepper t-shirt and a notepad that features a photo of a ticket for the Beatles 1964 show at Olympia Stadium that Helen attended as a 15-year old!
After a while, we were all getting hungry, so decided to try the Samba Steakhouse for dinner.
For years I've wanted to try Samba. It has a unique system where you pay $39 per person and they bring you all the skewered meats you want. Each meal starts with a basic salad and some round baked dough balls that you dip in oil. Then come the skewered beef, chicken, turkey wrapped in bacon, sausage, pork and lamb. They give you a small card that is green on one side, red on the other. If you leave the green side showing, they bring you more meat. Show the red side and it means "no meat for now." The meal also includes side dishes of black beans, rice, sugared plantains, veggies and garlic bread. Kevin and I pounded down as much meat as we could possibly hold. All of it was tasty, except the pork was a bit dry. Tricia and Helen showed much more restraint. But we all enjoyed the meal!
We decided a little walk would be nice, so we headed south on the Strip to Caesar's Palace. We entered at the Forum Shops and Tricia and Kevin were impressed by all the amazing architecture of the shops. We stopped at a shop that sells framed, autographed items of pop culture and history. Always cool to browse the exhibits that include Teddy Roosevelt, The Beatles, John Dillinger, Al Capone, Buffalo Bill, Geronimo and so many more. Helen and Kevin each bought a great matted photo display of the Beatles for only $25.
Then we continued walking south into Bellagio where we showed our guests the great lobby area that features the blown glass flowers of Dale Chihuly. We visited the conservatory that has a display honoring the Chinese New Year - the Year of the Monkey. We headed outside and to watch a Bellagio Fountain Show. The first one was a classical tune that we enjoyed so much that we decided to stay for another show. They run every 15 minutes after dark, so it wasn't long before we were listening to "Viva Las Vegas" by Elvis and the water cannons shot high into the air. What a great way to end our evening as he made the walk back to Mirage where we said goodnight to Kevin and Tricia. Then Helen and I made the 40-minute drive back to our apartment.

Tigers Are Better With Upton? Vegas Says No.
While at Planet Hollywood yesterday, I picked up a Baseball Futures sheet and checked out the odds for the AL pennant and World Series.
The Tigers are currently 14-1 to win the AL Pennant and 30-1 to win the World Series. Surprisingly, the opening lines had the Detroiters at 12-1 and 25-1. So after making all the moves of adding Upton and others, the Vegas oddsmakers think the team has a worse chance to win both the AL and the WS. They've actually taken a step back after the roster moves!
The Red Sox and Royals are current AL favorites at 5-1. In the Central, the Indians at 8-1, the White Sox at 12-1 and the Twins are 20-1. So the Tigers are the 4th worst odds in their division, let alone the whole AL.
Could be another long season for us Tiger fans.
In college hoops futures, the current favorites are Kansas and North Carolina, both 6-1. The Spartans and Duke are right behind at 7-1. Oklahoma is 8-1. A couple of interesting longshots might be Iowa at 20-1 or West Virginia at 22-1. Michigan is a whopping 65-1 for you Wolverine backers.

Big Day in Blackjack, Football Not So Much
I decided to spend Sunday on The Strip watching the NFL playoff games at Planet Hollywood.
It took about 35 minutes to get to Ballys where I parked about 10 a.m. The Pats-Broncos game kicked off at noon here in LV, so I had some time to kill before I settled into the PH sports book. I like their book because the chairs are comfortable and the TV screens are large and clear. Ballys and Paris have two of the WORST sports books on the strip. Their screens are blurry and seating is not very comfortable at all.
Before walking to PH, I cashed two $25 tickets on hoops games from Saturday, for a profit of $45. Then I headed to PH, walking through Paris. I sat down at a bj table in Paris and played for about 20 minutes, notching a profit of $125. So, I figured, I was up $170 if I didn't make another bet.
I got to the PH sportsbook about 11 and grabbed a seat. As I watched the Iowa-Purdue basketball game, the place soon filled up. The betting line was 40-50 people long and I was glad I already had 5 parlays going. All of them had the Pats, though and they were all losers. By halftime of the game, I was getting bored and decided to walk back to Ballys where I sat down at a bj table and began one of the hottest runs of the whole trip.
There was one other guy at the table when I sat down. "I only have one chip left," he joked as I joined the game. He showed me a $100 chip and played it. On the first hand we both won.
My streak began slowly, with me betting $10-15 a hand. After getting up $200 or so, I began to press bets to $20-30 a hand and I kept winning. At one point, I won or pushed 11 straight hands before the dealer hit a blackjack that snapped the streak. One key hand happened when I had $25 bet and I got 8-8 against the dealer's 5. Following Basic Strategy, I split the 8s and got a 3 on the first one. I doubled down and got a king for 21. On the other 8, I got a 2 and again doubled down, landing an ACE for another 21. So I had $100 out there and won when the dealer flipped a 2 and caught a 10 for 17.
When I didn't make a good hand, the dealer busted for us.
Another highlight happened when I had a 16 and caught a 5 for 21. The very next hand I got dealt another 16 and HIT ANOTHER 5 for another winner! I was making hands like crazy. Hit 13, get an 8, hit 14, get a 6. It was unreal and my chip stack kept climbing.
Finally, I decided to leave. I counted up my chips and showed a profit of $1250. And the other guy at the table had run his $100 up to $1000. It was a fun magical run for both of us!
I headed home, calling Helen en route to tell her about our fun and profits. When I got home, we watched some of the other NFL game and had a tasty salad for dinner. Then it was time to enjoy some chocolates for dessert and settle down to watch Downton Abbey.
Today, I have a few errands to run and may play a bit at Red Rock. Scott is coming to LV tonight, arriving about 5 or so. He's driving up from Phoenix where he was honored yesterday with a National Salesman of the Year Award for his company. It's the 2nd year in a row that he's taken that honor. And so our adventure continues...
He's the Miguel Cabrera of Medical Device Salesmen!! We have tickets tonight for "Million Dollar Quartet," at Harrah's. That will be fun!

BBQ Lunch and a Movie
Helen and I had an full day on Friday.
We left the apartment at 9 a.m. and our first stop was a Target store to pick up a few items she wanted. Then I dropped her off for a 10 a.m. hair appointment that was going to take about 90 minutes. Since the hair salon was only a mile or so from the Rampart Casino, I drove over there to kill time while she had her hair done.
I played some blackjack against a dealer named Chuck, who grew up in San Diego and was a die-hard Chargers fan. I told him I was a Raiders fan and we had a good time talking AFC West football over the past 30 years. Even though he's loved the Bolts, he says if they move to LA, he's done with them. I won $140 and cashed in before going back to pick up Helen about 11:30.
We decided to go to the Red Rock casino for lunch and see if there was a matinee movie worth watching. We bypassed the casino food court and opted for Lucille's BBQ for lunch. I had BBQ ribs with a side order of pulled pork and BBQ beans. Washed it down with a tasty strawberry lemonade. Helen had a BBQ chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries, along with a club soda. Total bill was $33.
Then it was off to check out the movie choices. We opted for "The Revenent," over "Joy" because of the timing. It was showing at 2:20, while Joy didn't begin until 3:15. So we settled in for the movie, which was compelling, but a little too violent for Helen. She had to avert her eyes more than once due to blood and gore. We both thought it was historically accurate and beautiful cinematography, but also grisly.
Got home about 530 and watched some TV and relaxed with a few Ghiradelli chocolates. And so our adventure continues...

Curse You, Ace-Queen!
Wednesday night I was playing in the weekly freeroll poker tourney at Bally's, hoping to be one of the final 20 players to cash for $300.
The event started promptly at 6 p.m. with 59 players, a larger than usual field for recent tourneys. I got off to a good start, taking down a few pots and building my stack from $5,000 to almost 12,000 when the 10-minute break came 100 minutes into play. By then the field had been whittled to 36 and I was in pretty good shape. I had the 3rd largest stack at the table and decided I would only play solid starting hands and try to steal the blinds when possible.
After the break, some of the short-stacked players began to fall out until there were 32, 30, 29 players left. I lost some valuable chips when I looked down and found A-Q of mixed suits in my hand. The blinds at this time were $1000 and 500. Several players folded, so I bet $3,000 thinking I could take down the blinds. But I barely got my chips in the pot when the guy to my left went all in for $10,000. I just couldn't risk all my chips, so I had to fold. The loss left me with about $9,500 left.
The very next hand I found myself with the very same starting hand, A-Q. Again several guys folded and I went ALL IN, expecting again to take down the $1,500 in blinds. But I got a quick call from a guy who had just a few more chips than I did. He showed K-K. The flop came 4-9-Ace! I had taken the lead on the flop. The turn card was a 2 and I was anticipating a nice stack of almost $20,000 when the flop came A KING!! The guy had two possible winning cards and he hit one on the river to knock me out of the tourney in 28th place. Frustrating...
Earlier in the day I won $125 in blackjack, so it wasn't a losing day, but I came soooo close to winning another 300 in the tourney.
While waiting for the tourney to begin, I enjoyed a pulled pork sandwich at the Nosh eatery and saw a heart-wrenching scene involving a Dad and his two young daughters. Dad was hustling across the casino floor pulling a suitcase behind him. His long legs were moving fast and the two girls, about 4 or 5 were desperately trying to keep up while pulling their own tiny Dora the Explorer suitcases. Dad was 10 feet, then 15 feet ahead of the girls moving quickly across the Ballys casino floor. The girls were crying out "Daddy, Wait" and "Daddy, Daddy." But he didn't seem to hear and was soon some 20 feet ahead of the girls in a busy casino. I wanted to slap the guy. Finally he stopped and looked back. He waited while the girls caught up, but seemed irritated that their little legs couldn't keep up. What a jerk!!
On Tuesday, Helen and I went to see "Hitzville," a Motown music show at Planet Hollywood. It was GREAT. A live 5-piece band and 7 talented singers played dozens of Motown songs from the '60s. It was great fun and brought back a lot of memories. During the show a video montage of the original Motown groups is shown on three screens. The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and others were shown. At $45 a ticket, it's a huge bargain and I recommend it to anyone who loves Motown music.
Next Monday night, Scott comes to visit. It'll be good to see him and we're going to see "Million Dollar Quartet" with him the following day. Then next Wednesday our niece, Tricia and her husband Kevin come for a visit. They're staying at the Mirage and will be seeing "Love" the Beatles show. Should be fun seeing them!

It's Show Time!
The next week will find us seeing a couple of fun-sounding shows. Helen and I are looking forward to seeing "Hitzville," a Motown musical show tomorrow night at Planet Hollywood. Then a week later we're going back to re-see "Million Dollar Quartet" with Scott at Harrah's. Scott has a business trip to Arizona next weekend, then will make the drive to LV on Monday and spend that night and Tuesday night with us before flying back to Michigan on Wednesday. So we're all going to MDQ on Tuesday night. Should be fun.
Over the weekend I had one losing session and two winning sessions on The Strip. On Friday, I lost $70 in poker at Ballys. but bounced back with a nice $550 win on Saturday and another $440 profit yesterday. Both of those were mostly blackjack. I was playing a lot of poker at Ballys where I ran into a guy who grew up in Traverse City. His name was Tony and he played football for Jim Ooley in the 1980s. Now he's a sales rep in the Detroit area, but would like to move back to TC some day.
Also had some football success during the NFL playoffs. I played a teaser of Chiefs +11 and Packers+13.5 that paid $183. Another teaser of Pats +1.5, Cardinals -1 and Broncos -1 paid $109. Lost a parlay with Cardinals -7 on the Packers Hail Mary pass that tied the game, but that's football.
Yesterday I played both poker and blackjack at Ballys, but took some time for a Strip walk. A stop by Cromwell was successful, with a $300 win. But the most important stop was at the Ghiradelli chocolate shop where I snagged a bag of their 80-piece chocolates for $27.95. They offer you $20 off if you buy 3 bags, but I just wasn't up for that yet.
While I was on my Strip Trip, Helen was on the phone with friends and family. She's also enjoying some of the movie channels we have on our Cox Cable subscription. On the way home, I picked up some BBQ chicken salads from Capriottis. The plan was to eat light/healthy to offset our later gorging on chocolate. Well, gorging might be an exaggeration. Helen and I are able to limit our intake to 3 or 4 pieces each and call that good. We enjoyed the treats while watching "Downton Abbey" then it was time for bed.
This morning I need to get over to Red Rock Casino where they are giving away Fleece Jackets to club members starting at 10 a.m. Because I am one of their higher level club members - I'm a President Level Player - I can pick my new free fleece up starting at 9 a.m. Then I'll head to Ballys where I need less than an hour to qualify for the Wednesday night Free Roll Tournament.

An Evening with John Fogerty
Helen and I spent a GREAT evening hearing Creedence Clearwater Revival founder John Fogerty performing at the Venetian on Wednesday. The 70-year-old rocked the house for more than 90 minutes as he played all of CCR's great hits. His band was tight and his voice was still strong. One of the highlights was when he teamed up with his son Shane on a couple of tunes. Fogerty is a mult-talented musician and he showed it by playing not only guitar, but piano and harmonica too. The crowd was full of AARP-age folks and it was more than a little disconcerting seeing grannies rocking their tight leather pants. But it was a fun night!
Before the concert, we stopped by Planet Hollywood's Miracle Mile Shops - one of Helen's favorite shopping venues. At a Skecher store she found a pair of shoes that she liked and they were on sale, so....done deal. At an ABC store she bought a pair of small leather purses and I found a couple of new Las Vegas t-shirts. Strolling through the shops, we also stopped for dinner at a Mexican place where we shared some appetizers. It was a perfect sized tasty meal, just enough but not too much.
After dinner, we drove to the Venetian, where the concert was set for 8 p.m. We got down there about 6 and killed some time visiting the Canal Shoppes and checking out the sports book. I also played a 25-cent Wheel of Fortune machine where I won $10. Earlier in the day, I had visited Red Rock casino and played a little blackjack. Over an hour or so, I eked out a $110 win.

Great Day on Anna's Birthday
Tuesday was Anna's Birthday, so we called down to Houston to wish her the best. She and Helen were still chatting when I decided to go make some money.
I drove over to Red Rock about 10 a.m. for a little blackjack action before heading down to the Strip. Walking into Red Rock, I pulled a ticket from my wallet, that I knew to be a loser. For the Monday night college football championship game, I bet a $20 parlay involving Clemson, total fg made and most points scored in the second half. I believed it was a loser because I thought I needed more than 3 fgs to win and Bama and Clemson kicked 3 between them.
But checking the ticket, I had a winner! Turns out I needed 3 fgs, not OVER 3 fg. Senior moment, I guess. Always double check your tickets! So I cashed for $120 and headed for the bj pit. I had a nice run and in about an hour I racked up $320 and decided to head to the Strip.
I parked on the roof of Bellagio, then walked over to Caesar's Palace where I headed straight to the box office where I bought two tickets for the Rod Stewart concert on March 23. They
were $117 each. Then I found a bj table and in about 30 minutes I was up $180 and decided to buy more tickets.
I had learned about a reasonably-priced Motown show at Planet Hollywood called "Hitzville" so I decided to get tickets for that. "Hitzville" features music by the Temptations, Supremes, Four Tops and more. Should be a good one. And the girl at the ticket counter recommended it highly, saying she's seen it three times. I joked that she HAS to say that, right? But no, she admitted some of the shows are not her favs. She gave me $25 off each ticket for a locals discount. So for both stubs, it was only $92, including taxes and fees.
I've been getting a good deal of walking along the Strip and the hike from CP to PH was taking its toll in the form of a blister on my right heel. I had a previous blister on my left foot, so today I switched from my sneakers to my sandals. I knew the right heel was sore, but I was surprised to see that it was bleeding. So after buying the tickets, I looked for a bj table to sit and rest a bit.
Played one-on-one with an Asian woman named Ral. It was a 6-deck game dealt from a shoe and I was betting $10-15 per hand and doing really well when I encountered the biggest hand of the day - or several days. I was up about $170 and was playing one or two hands, depending on how the cards were running. At this time, I played two hands of $20 each. On the first hand I was dealt 7-4 and on the second it was 3-3. Ral showed a 6, so I doubled down on the first hand and split the 3s. I got a 7 on the first 3 and had to double down on that. Then on the second 3, I got another 3, splitting them again. Then I got another 3, again splitting.
On two of the 3s I got face cards, but on one of them I got an 8, triggering another double down. By the time the splitting and doubling was over, I had 8 bets out there of $20 each. Ral flipped her hole card, showing an 8 for a total of 14, then she hit - an 8 and BUST! That $160 win propelled me to a $410 profit for the session and I left, planning to walk gingerly back to Bellagio and the car.
But as I walked by Paris, I decided to visit Ballys and hobbled under the Eiffel Tower, along the cobblestone walkway and into Ballys. This place has been my comfort zone for decades. I clearly remember coming here in 1984, during my first trip to Vegas, and winning $600 in one session. There have been plenty of other winning - and losing - bj sessions here over the years. So I settled into a bj table, planning to rest my foot, get a bottled water and play for 30 minutes or so. Got the water and began to play. I started slow, losing one, winning one, losing two, winning one, etc. I was dwindling my $100 buy-in when I hit a streak. I won 5 hands in a row, slowly bumping my bet. When the shoe ended, I was up $120 and decided to leave. I limped back across the bridge to Bellagio and made my way to the car.
It was the most profitable day of the year - over the 4 sessions, I netted $1,030. My first THOUSAND DOLLAR DAY of 2016. On the way home, I stopped for some takeout at Jason's Deli, one of our favorite eateries. I had a pastrami on rye and got Helen a California Club sandwich. Tasty stuff! Helen had spent the day making some custom birthday cards online and talking with relatives.
On Monday, she had fun skyping with her sisters Nat and Susan in TC. It was Susan's birthday and Helen was able to "attend" a little party for Sue via the internet.
Tonight we have tickets to see John Fogerty at the Venetian. Should be fun hearing lots of those old Creedence Clearwater Revival songs. Dinner will probably be somewhere on the Strip. And so our LV adventure continues...

Computer Virus Attacks, But We're Back Now
My trusty laptop had been giving me problems and last Monday it finally froze up and wouldn't let me access my emails, so on Tuesday I took it to our local computer guru, a friendly knowledgeable guy named Armando, LV Computer Doctor.
He took it apart, cleaned it up, installed Windows 10 and a few security programs and we're back online. I picked it up this morning and it's faster than ever. We met Armando last month when we had Helen's laptop undergo the same cleaning and updating process.
Beginning Jan. 1, I have been faithfully tracking our wins and losses. Through eight days, I have had six winning days and only two losing days. My good fortune has continued in both blackjack and poker. Before going to Armando's, I visited Red Rock casino and had a nice blackjack run that netted me $270 in about an hour. Then it was time for the 30-minute drive to the computer shop.
After leaving Armando's shop - he has a place about three miles northwest of the Strip - I drove to Wynn to play. The place was surprisingly busy, but it reminded me that the Consumer Electronics Show is in town. There used to be a standing joke that the pocket-protector-sporting CES participants would come to town with a fresh white shirt and a $20 bill and never change either one.
Not big spenders.
Anyway, I made my way from the rooftop parking deck, past the Ferrari store (yes you can buy a car there, but act fast because it's supposed to close soon) and to the casino. Found a blackjack table and won $130 in about 30 minutes. Then I took a break and checked out the elegance of Wynn and its sister casino, Encore. Both are beautiful, upscale locations that rival the elegance of Bellagio. While strolling into Encore, I played bj for about 15 minutes and posted a $70 win. Then it was a hike back to Wynn and up to the car.
I drove south on the Strip, finally stopping at Excalibur. Haven't been there for a couple of years, but I thought I'd check it out. Excalibur is a bit shabby compared to Wynn or Encore. Compared to other joints on the Strip, it's a family-oriented, low-roller sort of place. It's one of the MGM properties where they accept the MCard, which I turned in when I sat down for some blackjack. I looked for a two-deck pitch game, but all they have are 6-deck shoe games. I settled in and in about 15 minutes, I was up $120 and decided to walk.
So far my hit-and-run technique was working perfectly - four stops, four wins. I still had about two hours before I would head home, so I drove to MGM to play. I decided to mix things up and play some poker there. I checked in at the poker room and they were about ready to start a new game in 10 minutes. So I took a walk, visited the restroom and by the time I got back the game was beginning.
I sat four seats to the left of the dealer, one of my favorite spots. It's easy to see the flop from this point.
It was an up and down session. I won a couple of early pots with two pairs. On one hand I looked down at A-A and anticipated raking a nice pot. But when I bet $7, everyone folded and all I won was $7 from the blinds and two other players. Never got up too much or down too little. But as I was getting ready to go, I realized I was down $18. I really wanted to post another win, so I was happy when I looked down and, once again, saw A-A winking back at me.
This time, I bet $7 and got two callers. The flop came 4-7-J of different suits. The two callers checked and I again bet $7. One guy called, the other folded. Turn card was a 2. I bet $15 and the guy folded. So I took down a pot of $35, showing the Aces. Two hands later, I racked up my chips and left with a $16 profit. For the six sessions, I won $606. A nice day's work and the second highest total of the year, so far.
While I was out, Helen did some healthcare paperwork that she needs to do annually for her MS medicine. I need to mail that tomorrow. She also did some texting with Anna, who is back in Houston after visiting Michael in LA for awhile.
Traffic was heavy leaving the Strip and it took almost an hour to get home, where I made us two fresh, healthy salads for dinner. We enjoyed some Ghiradelli chocolates for dessert while we watched TV. Then it was time for me to get caught up on the blog as our LV adventure continues...

2016 Off To a Nice Start
Four days into the New Year and I'm just getting around to catching up on the blog.
It's been a blur of blackjack, poker and football games for the first few days of January. New Year's Eve was a low-key celebration for Helen and I. At 9 p.m. we popped the cork on some champagne and welcomed 2016.
After all, it was already midnight in Michigan were so many of our friends and family were already celebrating. Earlier that day I visited the Albertsons market and loaded up on chicken wings, potato salad, edamame salad, chips, dips, summer sausage, cheeses, olives and more. That gave us plenty of snackables to last for a few days.
On New Year;s Day I went to Red Rock to watch football and play some blackjack. I dropped $35 at the bj table. A rare losing session. The following day, Saturday, I went to Bally's to log hours toward the freeroll tourney. I rebounded with a vengeance, posting a sweet $500 win in poker and $335 in blackjack. Had several nice poker hands, but one of the most memorable was one that wasn't a winner.
I got dealt the K-10 of clubs and the flop was two more clubs A-J. I needed the Queen of clubs for my first ever Royal Flush. But, sorry, it didn't come. Any Queen would give me a straight, or a King would have given me high pair, but in fact, none of them and no clubs hit the turn or the river and I ended up with only a King high...no pairs, no straight. Still, it was a GREAT profitable day.
On Sunday, I was back at Red Rock by 9 a.m. to get in some football action and play poker. I hit a couple of nice hands and posted a profit of $140, factoring in my losing fb bets. One nice hand occurred when I was dealt A-6 of Hearts and the flop came A-6-10. A guy at the end bet $10 and I raised it to $20. Everyone else folded, but the original better sat and thought about it. He'd been shoving All-In on almost every hand he played, so I expected him to do it again.
I was not disappointed. He made a dramatic show of stacking all his chips - about $115 - and slowly shoving them into the center of the table and announcing "All In." I immediately called. The turn and river were non-factors and I showed my two pair. He muttered and tossed his cards face down into the muck. That was a nice pot!
This morning I drove down to Mandalay Bay to get tickets for the Michael Jackson show, "One." Our friends the Edsons and Tunes are coming to visit in Feb. and we decided to see the show together. We're all set for 6 tickets for the Feb. 19 show. They didn't offer a "locals discount" but they did offer a MCard discount if I had a players club card, which I did. So that knocked about $25 off each ticket. All six cost $601 - not bad for a major Vegas show on a Friday night. We were lucky to get six seats close to each other, especially since one is handicapped access for Helen.
After buying the tickets, I drove to Ballys and played some poker. I wanted to log a few hours toward the freeroll. I played for about 3 hours, posting a profit of $160. I have 8 hours so far, and need to get 4 more in for the tourney. About 2:30 I took a break from poker and walked to the Ghiradelli shop to buy some chocolates. En route to the chocolate store, I ate an apple I had brought from home. Somehow having that solitary fruit for lunch seemed to offset the decision to buy a big bag of chocolates.
Then it was a hike back to Ballys. The poker room was pretty full and there was a wait, so I found a blackjack table and played for an hour, stacking a profit of $200. Then it was time to head home. For the day, I won $360, got the tickets and some chocolates. A pretty nice day!
When I got home I made dinner - wild rice and vegetables. And Helen and I sampled the chocolates, limiting ourselves to 3 each. She was a little under the weather today, so she logged some couch time and addressed birthday cards to go out tomorrow.
And tomorrow our adventure continues...
